Cann's heroics can't save Bermuda

Lionel Cann notched a half-century in a losing cause against Uganda and then targeted an improved team-performance against the mighty Kenyans tomorrow.

Cann who scored an impressive 73, rescuing Bermuda from a desperate situation at 18 for 5, said he was disappointed with the result.

But after Sunday's win over the same opponents and some good individual performances yesterday, he is optimistic about Bermuda's chances in the one-day series with Kenya.

"We have a number of positives to take from the practice games. If we can bring it all together in one match then we can compete with them. At this point we should be able to give them a game."

Cann combined with Tucker (31) and then Rodney Trott (46) to give Bermuda a chance of a comeback after the top order misfired spectacularly in pursuit of Uganda's 256 in Nairobi.

But despite some resistance from Malachi Jones (23), Bermuda were all out for 210 - a 46-run loss.

Earlier, it was the same players that excelled with the ball - Trott, Cann and Tucker posting the best figures for Bermuda.

Skipper Irving Romaine had another game to forget with his second consecutive duck of the tour. Opener Stephen Outerbridge also had a duck, while David Hemp scored 2.

Cann, who scored two sixes and seven fours in an uncharacteristically conservative innings, said: "We had a bad day in the field. They were gettable, but we gave away too many runs.

"We found ourselves coming up short. It's always a struggle when you are 18 for five inside the first ten overs.

"We did well to get as close as we did from there, but I felt we were still in a position where we could have won the game.

"Janeiro got a bad decision, which didn't help. But it was great to see Rodney and Malachi play so well. It's another step up for them and they look like they deserve to be here."

Cann said the under-19 recruits had added an energy and enthusiasm to the team that had lifted everyone in the camp.

"It's great to have the youngsters around. We are training hard but we are a team that has fun, no matter what.

"It was great to get a victory on Sunday. We should have done better today (Tuesday). Some guys are not firing right now but they will turn it round because they are quality players.

"Kevin Hurdle's bowling quick and picking up wickets, Some of the senior players look to have a new-found hunger. Janeiro Tucker is in good form and that all bodes well.

"Kenya's at a different level but we have a number of positives to come out of the opening games.

"From my own point of view, I'm in good form right now. Kenya's always been good to me. I know I can score runs at this level and hopefully I can do it again on Thursday."[[In-content Ad]]
