Cannonier reigns supreme in Boxing Day races
The day’s event saw riders from seven classes ranging from pee wee to expert compete for bragging rights on the newly restored race track.
The previous layout was completely obliterated by hurricane Igor last September, resulting with a delayed start to the 2010-11 motocross season.
Starting off with a bang was Aaron Cannonier, who ruled supreme in the expert class after seeing off the threat of the returning Zeiko Majors.
Preston Martin prevailed in the 85cc senior class after withstanding a fierce battle with the equally promising Jade Trott, son of Bermuda Motocross Club president Jonathan ‘Stalks’ Trott.
The day’s other winners included Logan Jones (50cc), Zendai Ingham-Fubler (65cc junior), Zamere Darrell (65cc senior), Shadae Williams (85cc junior), Kion Glasford (Pee Wee), Dale Boorman (Novice) and Jamel Pitcher (Over 30s).
BMC chief Trott summed up last weekend’s official season opener as a “huge success”.
He added: “It was very competitive racing although most of the riders looked unseasoned. I think some of that was due to not having much riding time to prepare ourselves physically. But after last weekend’s racing I think many riders will go back and do their homework.
Modified track
“I just think there’s going to be some really competitive riding in all classes (this season). It’s really looking promising and the fans had a good hair-raising event to look at and things went really well.”
As for the modified race track, Trott said: “We had to make some changes but it’s a pretty easy track and I think the riders will adjust pretty good. I think everybody will adjust as they go along through the season and make the changes to their bikes and things like that.”
The BMC chief also thanked all those who assisted in the restoration of the Southside racing facility that suffered extensive damage during hurricane Igor.
He said: “First and foremost I have to thank Butterfield Excavation. We also had the wonderful guys at the Marsh Folly depot (Works and Engineering), Chris Williams and SAL who provided us with a machine. We also had many private sponsors that stepped onboard and really assisted us.”
Racing resumes at Southside on New Year’s Day.
