Can you really trust the OBA on FutureCare?

By Zane De Silva- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 28: Since 1998, the PLP has stood strong for seniors by increasing pensions, eliminating the land tax on Bermudians’ primary homesteads, driving down the cost of prescription drugs, eliminating upfront payments on medical treatment, introduced FutureCare and much, much more.

Our seniors are the pillars of Bermuda, the ones who have built our country and who, in their golden years, we at The Progressive Labour Party have always kept in our thoughts and in our vision for Bermuda.

These are the people we are fighting for...the people who stand to lose the most if we allow FutureCare to be scrapped. These are the people who don’t want to go backwards to the way it used to be. These are people who want us to keep moving forward on making the lives of Bermuda’s seniors better, safer and less stressful.

The OBA continues to be inconsistent on FutureCare, giving the impression that they either are unwilling to lead on this issue by stating clearly where they really stand, or that they will say anything to seize power

The OBA’s Anthony Francis has stated, “the current model of Future Care will be scrapped because it is unfair and unsustainable”.

The OBA’s Andrew Simons says, “the OBA supports FutureCare”.

On FutureCare, the former UBP spokeswoman on seniors, OBA’s Louise Jackson says “it has got to be means tested as it is not fair”.

Mrs Jackson has voiced her reservations about FutureCare many times in House of Assembly. Her colleague, former UBP leader Grant Gibbons, has expressed similar views.

OBA Deputy Leader and Former UBP Leader Michael Dunkley says “seniors enrolled in FutureCare will see no change in their benefits”.

OBA Leader Craig Cannonier says “austerity isn’t such a bad idea...”

Who is really in charge over there? Is the OBA more concerned with gaining power or standing strong for our seniors?

Vulnerable seniors

Will they cut benefits for our most vulnerable seniors or will they decrease premiums for the wealthy?

I don’t know and you don’t know because they continue to duck, dodge, hide and run from giving the people of Bermuda their real plan.

The PLP has a proven record of standing strong for seniors, delivering on real progress and creating a real improvement in their quality of life.

On this we have been consistent and because of this you know what you can expect from a PLP government; strong, steady progress that delivers real improvement on the lives of seniors. With the others, you just don’t know what you’ll be getting.
