WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29: No pain, no gain.
Just ask motocross rider Zico Majors who broke his right shoulder but battled through the pain barrier to clinch the 250cc Expert Class championship on the final day of the 2011 campaign at Southside.
The ten-year motocross veteran injured himself in a freak accident during the day’s second heat, giving nearest rival Shakir Smith a sniff at the championship.
Nosedive
The mishap that nearly cost Majors the title occurred near the spectators’ jump. A rock protruded from the face of the jump, resulting with the construction worker taking a nosedive into the dirt.
But with the championship hanging in the balance, the 26-year-old rider dusted himself off, courageously got back on his bike and completed the minimum amount of laps required to clinch the title in the final race.
And he did so without changing gears riding with one arm on the throttle and the other clutching his injured shoulder.
“The pain was very excruciating. It was terrible but the crowd pulled me through,” Majors told the Bermuda Sun.
“They were all cheering for me and that’s how I was able to finish those last two laps.”
Majors feared his march towards a second championship in the Expert Class was done and dusted after he broke his shoulder.
“I thought it was over because I couldn’t even stand up. My chest was hurting and I couldn’t even breathe.
“But my friends encouraged me to ride those last two laps because I have rode hard and done so good all season.
“They said I might as well ride on and become champion of the year and without them I probably would not have been able to do it.
“I am really happy and excited to win a second Expert championship. I think winning the championship actually eased the pain a bit.”
Bermuda Motocross Club (BMC) president Jonathan Trott added: “It was an extraordinary feat.
“You could see that he was in lots of pain. But Zico controlled the bike with one arm, thus showing the real champion that he is.”
