Boxer misses out on medal after weight class mix-up

Young boxer Kejon Trott was the only one of the Bermuda team to win a fight at last week's amateur championships in Trinidad.

Yet he's the only member of the three-man team to come back without a medal.

To make matters worse for the former Arizona Golden Gloves winner, the guy he beat inside three minutes headed home to St. Vincent with a silver medal around his neck.

"That's how crazy it is," said Trott.

"I beat him fairly in the ring and I should get a medal. I was robbed."

Trott was entered into the middleweight class after the weigh-in on day one and pitted against Andrew Telford.

It wasn't until after he had destroyed Telford in a matter of minutes that organizers decided he should have been put in the light heavyweight class instead.

They said it was too late for him to change classes and put his opponent through to the final, where he lost his second fight in succession and was awarded a silver medal.

"The referee stopped the fight in the first round. That should have been my medal.

"I was pleased with my performance, I did what I had to do.

"I went in the ring, I beat the guy out in the first round. If the organizers in Trinidad messed it up that's not my fault."

Coach Quinn Mallory said he had not been allowed to be present at the weigh-in but had been surprised when Trott was put in the middleweight class.

He said they had informed him after the fight that it had been a mistake and Trott had been put in the wrong class.

He had tried to persuade them to allow Trott to then fight in the light-heavyweight class but they would not allow it.

Senseless

"It makes no sense," he said, "Kejon was the one that won his fight. I'm going to write to them and see if we can still get him a medal."

Trott was not the only one of the Bermuda contingent on the end of a rough call. Ryan Lampano, who was one of only two fighters in the Batamwight class at the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association event, was way ahead on points when the ref inexplicably stopped the fight, calling it in favour of his opponent in round three.

Mallory said Lampano had taken his second standing eight-count and had his hands up ready to fight, when the ref intervened.

"I think he got his sums wrong," he said.

"These guys train all year to fight in this and if you are going to stop it after a couple of punches it doesn't make sense.

"Lampano was ahead on points. He had his hands up, he wasn't staggering and he was ready to fight.

"He just looked at me and said 'why have they stopped the fight?' he couldn't believe it."

Lampano still picked up a silver medal, for finishing second in the class.

The other Bermuda fighter, Kenneth Williams, lost his fight on points in the novice light-heavyweight class. But the field was small enough for him to pick up a bronze medal anyway.

Trott said he did not begrudge his colleagues their medals but he thought it was crazy that he was the only one who didn't have one.

"They are behind me 100 per cent. We are team mates — I am behind them and they are behind me. I am happy they got medals but definitely I think I deserve one, too. I was robbed."

Despite the results controversy, Mallory said the event had been good experience for the Bermuda boxers.[[In-content Ad]]
