BIOS and Dalhousie partner for new internship programme
TUESDAY, APRIL 24: Dalhousie University and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) have teamed up to establish a new programme that will strengthen ties between these two world-class ocean research and education institutions.
The Dalhousie-BIOS Experiential Learning Fund will establish permanent internships for Dalhousie undergraduate and graduate students who intend to conduct research at BIOS, as well as provide funding for faculty exchanges.
“There is a long history between Bermuda and Dalhousie University,” said Dr. Nick Bates, Interim Director at BIOS. “Building on the successes of a century of resident and visiting scientists and global collaborations with academic institutes, BIOS is very pleased to join forces in this exciting partnership with Dalhousie.”
He also pointed out that, through this partnership, “students will get a chance to experience the uniqueness involved with living at a scientific research institute, working alongside world-class scientists on current research projects.”
Floyd Dykeman, Vice President, External, Dalhousie University, noted that “Dalhousie’s reputation as Canada’s oceans university is not by happenstance but has been earned through major global achievements in oceans research, marine prediction and policy development. Partnering with BIOS will give our students a tremendous opportunity to learn about and research Bermuda’s diverse ecosystems.”
Funding for this project will come through donations to Bold Ambitions: The Campaign for Dalhousie. “There are many Dalhousie alumni, private corporations and supporters of oceans research in general who have expressed strong interest in supporting this project,” said Dykeman. “It means increased revenues for BIOS while, at the same time, providing a valuable international research and experiential learning opportunity for our students and faculty.”
The program will be launched at an event hosted by Dalhousie University for its alumni and friends on May 2 at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.
