No.1 junior, Na'im Azhar came up against Wild Card entry Christopher Lawson from Jamaica in a three-setter that could have seen either player the victor.
After losing the first set, 4-6, Azhar battled back and secured the second set, 6-2, but it was the third set that had the crowd cheering for both players after each point.
With Azhar up 5-4, he had double match point at 15-40 but one of Lawson's strokes hit the tape and trickled over. At deuce, Lawson fired a huge ace and captured the game when Azhar over hit past the baseline.
The disappointment of not converting his match points seemed to stay with Azhar as he lost his serve at Love, allowing Lawson to serve for the match.
There was more drama at 30-0 when Lawson began cramping in his wrist and received a time violation before calling for the trainer. In obvious discomfort, Lawson lost the next two points, giving Azhar a ray of hope to perhaps break back. Sadly it was not meant to be as Lawson found the strength to come up with a huge ace down the centre line giving him his first match-point.
Lawson converted his match point when Azhar sent a forehand past the baseline, giving Lawson the win, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
The local junior girls also had bad luck in their second round with Caitlin Gordon going down in straight sets, 6-0. 6-2, Amanda Burns in two sets, 6-0, 6-1 and Carolita Joseph, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
In boys doubles action local teammates, Johnny Holland and Miles Brewer secured a first set win over Luis Delgado and Rodrigo Rappaccioli but eventually lost in three sets. Singles and doubles action continues today at 10 o'clock at the WER Joell Stadium and the public is welcome to attend.
