The Bermuda Zoological Society has been given a $15,000 grant to help fund its top-rated education programme.
The scheme boosts the science curricula of about 6,000 students each year and teaches youngsters about protecting the island.
It includes classes at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, trips to nature reserves and marine parks onboard the BZS vessel Endurance, teaching kits for educators and holiday camps that teach children as young as four about the environment.
The grant was donated by Bermuda-based insurance company Allied World. It is the second year the firm has given money to BZS.
Joseph Furbert, BZS education officer, said: “BZS is very proud of the many ways in which we support our community by offering numerous educational and family programmes.
“But we are mindful that without the support of sponsors like Allied World, we simply could not do it.”
BZS is the support charity for BAMZ and funds education programmes, conservation and research projects and community outreach events to spread the message of protecting island environments.
Tracey Gibbons of Allied World said: “Our world continues to shrink as a result of tremendous advances in technology and, as such, we all must strive to be responsible global citizens.
“A critical first step towards this is ensuring our children are educated about the environment.
“Allied World is proud to support the ongoing efforts of BZS. BZS’s education programme is a valuable tool in instilling a sense of responsibility for the wildlife and resources that surround us.”
Allied World also provided BPA-free water bottles to all children participating in BZS summer Aqua Camps this week.
