Bermuda Karate Open Championships

The 24th Bermuda Open Karate Championships had a slight increase in competitor numbers from last year, and several international visitors. These included referee John Chung, organizer of the World Cup Martial Arts Organization, which has the Bermuda Open in its calendar of events.

Also from the U.S., was another repeat visitor to the event Kare Ware, gold medallist in forms and weapons.

First time Canadian entrant Alma Bencivenga placed first in brown belt forms ahead of Alaia Wharton, and second to Melesia Iris in sparring in a tight match (3/2).

The most competitive sparring divisions were boys 10-11 and adult black belt men.

Among the boys Jahnai Ratteray was first with a 5/0 win over Kent Bean, who was the brown belt forms winner in his age group. In the semifinal Jamie Cann and Ru-Jzarr Simmons were tied 1/1 when time ran out; Ru-Jzarr scored in sudden death overtime to take third place. In the adult black belt division semifinal Alan Looby finished third over Iejaa Caines (8/4).  Shaun Dill defeated Sentwali Woolridge 6/3 to take first place in the final and continued to the grandchampionship over Andre Joseph 8/0. Joseph had won the masters category when Richard Harkness had to withdraw due to injury.[[In-content Ad]]
