WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20: It doesn’t matter what happens in the future, the Berkeley Gold team will always be known as the first winners of the Tokio Millennium Re Triathlon’s Secondary Schools Challenge.
Swimmer Dejan Wellman, cyclist Vashon Cann and runner Juma Mouchette teamed up to bring glory – and some cash – to Berkeley.
The school accepted the trophy and a cheque for $150 for their winning efffort last Friday.
Wellman, said: “I was happy to win. I was happy to do this, especially with the team that I had Juma and Vashon,”
Wellman said winning the Secondary Schools Challenge was something he could be proud of and put on his resume.
Distance
Wellman helped put Berkeley Gold in good position as he handed off to Cann who had two Saltus teams to chase down, including one with Daniel Oatley.
Cann: “My strategy was to keep him within my sights and on the last lap try to pass him, but he got a gap on me on the hill and I just didn’t see him after that. I made sure it wasn’t too much of a big gap for Juma to close the distance.”
Mouchette said: “I passed both the Saltus runners on the first lap on the way up, but we actually ran too far. But after that it was just keep going. I saw them as soon as I made the right hand turn onto Front Street and pulled them down.
“This is my last year at Berkeley so it feels good to help them out one more time.”
