Letter to the Editor / Parking at Horseshoe Bay

Beach’s taxi-only area is a bad idea

Dear Sir,

On Sunday April 2, I went to Horseshoe Bay Beach in the late afternoon about 4:30pm.

I parked my car in the only available space in the “Taxi Only” area along with other private cars. I returned to my car within an hour and was horrified to find a parking ticket stuck to my window.

I go to this beach frequently all year either to walk or swim at different times of the day. During the cooler months or slow tourist season there are never any taxis making use of these spaces so locals park there.

The sign is printed “Taxis Only”.

It does not designate any particular times or months like other parking restricted area as listed on the back of the parking ticket e.g. *G,L,S, that appears to apply to Hamilton and St. George’s ordinances.

Does this mean that this is applicable all year? Even in the summer months when you are visiting in the late evening after dark, or very early in the morning?

Who made the complaint?

Was it a lone taxi driver who ventured down there to take a break or to look for business?

The parking lot was filled with resident locals’ cars or scooters.

The few visitors that may have been there had come down from Southampton Princess on their shuttle and walked through the gate — I know this as I actually had conversations with some of them.

The time and seasonal restrictions should be clearly stated on the sign.

I also noted that there are no signs regarding the restrictions on dogs on the beach during certain times of the year. Would these owners get slapped with a ticket right away or a warning? I saw at least two on the beach.

Now that the G.P.S. system is in place, will it allow all these taxis to sit there for hours waiting for a job?
