BDA to face the future of the Windies

Bermuda will be up against some of the future stars of West Indies cricket in their first warm-up matches for the World Cup qualifiers next week.

Trinidad Under-23 coach Clem Hercules told the Bermuda Sun that he plans to blood the best of the country's crop of exciting youngsters against Gus Logie's men at Couva on Monday and Tuesday.

Among the opposition will be explosive opener William Perkins, who starred in the Stanford 20-20 tournament, and batsman Jason Mohammed.

Hercules admitted he knew 'absolutely nothing' about Bermuda's team but said he would not take them for granted.

He rested a few of his 'big name' players for recent matches against a touring South African side but will bring the bulk of them back to face Bermuda.

"I don't want our boys to think this is going to be a walkover. I try not to encourage that type of thinking.

"We do not know the opponent so what we have to do is play to the best of our ability. If we put in maximum effort and play better than Bermuda we should beat them. First of all we have to play good cricket."

Other rising stars in the Trini team that will play Bermuda in two one-day games on Monday and Tuesday include all-rounder Mario Belcon, batsman Daron Cruickshank and Rishi Bachan, a spinner that also featured in the Stanford 20-20 super series. Darren Bravo and Adrian Barath have already progressed to the senior team and are unavailable.

Hercules said the Under-23 squad, which came together for a seven-week training camp late last year, and the Trinidad cricket academy were a big part of the future of West Indies cricket.

He said the likes of Barath and Bravo were the first high profile graduates of a system that could produce more international stars.

"We have lost some players to the senior team but we still have a very strong squad. "We played some matches against a South African team and they were no match for us, so we blooded a lot of younger players. For Bermuda we will have our strongest 11."
