Young boxer Nikki Bascome has targeted a spot in the London Olympics after his impressive victory over Jashun Thomas on Saturday night.

Bascome, 17, was in fine form at the Fists of Fury bout as he outpointed Thomas in the fight of the night.

Now the young Welterweight is heading to Mexico to get another competitive bout as he builds towards the Olympics.

"That's what we're looking for - London in four years time.

"I've got to keep training and get as many fights under my belt as I can.

"I have to go away quite a bit to get the experience and to get regular competition, that's the only way I'm going to get better.

"I'll fight anyone locally, any time. I'm not going to say I'm the best. I need experience. The more fights I can get the better."

Bascome will head to Mexico next month with his coach Quinn Mallory as he continues his boxing education.

He competed at the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association championships in Trinidad earlier this year - losing in the semi-finals after a controversial judging decision.

Bascome admits he was getting into trouble, 'skylarking' on the streets before Police Gym's Charles Wade persuaded him to try his luck in the ring.

He lost his first fight as a novice, but since then he hasn't looked back. His record of 2-2 (it should be 3-1 he insists in reference to that fight in Trinidad) might not look spectacular.

But his coaches believe he has all the tools to make the big time.

"I've been in training five days a week. I love to box. It's bringing me a lot of opportunities so I've got to stick to it and see what comes my way."

One possible bout on local soil could be a rematch with Thomas, another young fighter tipped as a prospect for the future.

The pair fought a frenetic battle on Saturday night with Bascome's speed and movement too much for his heavier, more powerful opponent.

Bascome struck the one real blow of the bout, felling Thomas with a body shot to the solar plexus.

"I give him his respect. He gave it to me and I gave it to him. It was a good fight. He was about ten pounds heavier than me so I needed to show some stamina and endurance.

"I'd be up for a rematch but he's got to come down to my weight."
