Azhar using tennis to get degree

Tennis player and scholar Naim Azhar is using his forehand to help fund his ambition of becoming a doctor.

The 19-year-old is currently studying Biology at Cumberland University in Tennessee on a full tennis scholarship.

Azhar finished last season with an 8-3 winning record and helped his team reach the final of their conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (like the NCAA but for smaller universities and colleges).

Azhar said it was great to be playing a sport he loved and getting an education into the bargain.

"Everybody wants to go professional and that is what you train for but there is plenty of places you can go with it.

"I'm satisfied to be able to do something that I enjoy and get an education out of it. To be able to play a game and have someone pay for your schooling is nice."

The biggest adjustment for Azhar since moving to Tennessee, after graduating from Bill Adams' tennis academy in Florida, has been the climate.

Tennessee is so cold that half the tennis season is played indoors.

He said the standard of tennis has also been tough but he was pleased with his performances in his first year.

"I actually had the best record on my team last season."
