Straight off the bat / A player’s perspective

Any club from the East Zone could have won it

We have already exceeded my expectations so early in the season. Not so much by winning, but by the way we're winning.

The guys are really handling the pressure of the 20-20 game.

Chris Foggo is leading from the front again. Oliver Pitcher is scoring runs. All of my players have been outstanding.

The win against Police was quite exciting, but it was also quite easy. We had a game plan. We bowled extremely well. The wicket was pretty slow and we figured that anywhere under 150 we would chase.

We got on top and we were on top the whole time because we knocked Police all out for 110. It was our plan to score more than five runs an over and play risk free so it ended up being a very easy match.

The only really tough match we had was when we played Bailey's Bay and we won by one run. Our players were a bit complacent, which put us under pressure.

Format change

I'd like to see the format change next year because it's not fair if you have two strong teams from one zone, then you can only have one reach the final. I felt like all the top teams were the Eastern teams this year. St. George's was very strong and Cleveland and Bailey's Bay are also two great teams. In the end, only one of us could make the final. Any of us could have made the final, it just happened to be St. David's.

Hopefully next year we can be split up. If you split the zones up, then two teams from the Central Zone or the Western Zone could make the final.

20-20 here to stay

This is an exciting form of cricket, but it's not just about being exciting for the crowds - the players are learning from it. This isn't just about making the fans happy. It makes you handle pressure; it helps increase a player's cricket knowledge.

One over can change a match. A team can get two wickets or it can score 20 runs so it makes the players concentrate on every single ball. You can't have any lapses. That's what the players have to adjust to. 20-20 definitely helps cricketers become better pressure players.

50 overs

St. David's has a very young team as we start the regular cricket season on Sunday. There are seven or eight guys who could play for a very long time so our expectations are very high. In 50 overs, we will play three or four young players. We'll be sticking to that this season. The senior players will have to pick up the bulk of the weight while nurturing the younger players.

We're always fighting for honours because we take care of our youngsters. This year we lost five players but we're playing better than ever.

Our youngsters are tough and they want to win all the time. They want top honours. They've been winners since a young age like in the junior counties and in Colts Cup Match. They've always been winners so they look forward to winning.

I want to win every single match and look forward to the season.[[In-content Ad]]
