A firearms officer today described vividly how a man charged with murder was arrested just hours after the incident.
Sergeant Raoul Ming was part of the Emergency Response Team that arrested murder-accused Jay Dill.
He told a jury he received a page at 9:20pm on March 31, 2011 and went into work at the gun armoury in Prospect.
Sgt Ming said he was made aware that Randy Robinson had been shot and killed that night.
At the armoury, Inspector Maxwell briefed the team.
“Roles were set out for search warrants. Jay Dill was to be arrested”, he said.
The jury heard the team arrived at 7 Palmetto Road, Pembroke, the home of co-accused Devon Hewey at 2:50am.
“As we got to 7 Palmetto Road, Pembroke, we deployed a tactic which involved calling out to the occupants inside of that residence.
“There were a total of seven people inside the house.
“As a result of that previous meeting with Insp Maxwell, my role was that of prisoner reception. More specifically, the reception of Mr Dill.”
Sgt Ming continued: “Mr Dill was instructed by the call out officer to walk backwards to the door with his hands interlocked and on to the top of his head.
“As Jay Dill reached the doorway, I applied handcuffs, locking them to the back of Mr Dill.
“I informed him that he was under arrest on suspicion of murder. I cautioned him and he made no reply.”
The jury heard Mr Dill was placed inside the back of a marked police car and taken to the Hamilton Police Station.
Mr Dill and Mr Hewey deny the premeditated murder of Mr Robinson and using a firearm to commit murder.
The trial continues.
