Islanders and their MPs will take to the parks and streets of St George’s this weekend to carry out a blitz on trash.

The cleanup has been organized by local MPs Kenneth Bascome and Nandi Davis, together with Keep Bermuda Beautiful.

They have been spurred into action after constituents raised concerns about the amount of litter being dumped in and around the town.

Mr Bascome told the Bermuda Sun: “The amount of litter that has been strewn across St George’s is now worse than I can remember for a long time.

“We need as many people to come out and support this effort as possible.

“The more people who turn out to help the more we can get done.

“I hate litter and the amount of bottles and plastic I see thrown in bushes and on roadsides is very concerning.”

The cleanup will take place this Saturday between 10 and 2pm.

Organizers will set up three meeting points; the Ferry Park Car Park, the Mullet Bay Car Park and Garrison Field, where people can assemble to lend a hand.

The volunteers will then be split up into smaller groups and assigned an area to focus on.

KBB is providing all the trash bags and gloves for people to use.

Mr Bascome said the cleanup would focus on areas like Barry Road, Ferry Reach and Tobacco Bay, which had been blighted by litter over recent months.

The project has also been arranged to coincide with the beginning of the new tourism season.

He added: “People should come and join us because this is their island home and we have a responsibility to take care of it.

“We hope to make this cleanup a regular feature of the calendar and we would like to do it more often.”

KBB Executive Director, Anne Hyde, told the Sun: “This will also be a great opportunity for family time together and some community building.

“It’s a great way of putting something back into your community.”

If you want to take part in the initiative go to one of the three meeting points for 10am on Saturday. n
