Opposition Leader Marc Bean is to open a betting shop on Court Street at the end of the month.

It is called Paradise Games and “there is one more investor — it is a partnership”, confirmed friend Roxanne Christopher.

She owns Bliss Hair & Nails, also on Court Street, and said Paradise Games would be a “welcome addition” to local businesses in North Hamilton.

“It will create additional jobs and create a spillover effect as well,” Ms Christopher said.

Paradise Games will be the fourth betting shop to open on the island, at a time when gambling is under the spotlight with Government’s decision to scrap the public referendum on casinos.

Mr Bean declined to comment to the Bermuda Sun, but confirmed his involvement in a statement to the media yesterday.

“First, let me declare my interests, to counteract the lies and innuendos being spread by OBA surrogates and sympathizers.

“I have interest in a company that was granted a fixed-odd betting licence under the Betting Act 1976, with the knowledge and sign-off of Finance Minister Bob Richards, in May 2013.

“I have no personal interest, past, present or future, in on-island casino gambling.”

Ms Christopher sees the new business as a boost for the area. “People who patronize the betting shop are likely to head to Soul Food (restaurant) and Zaki’s (Bakery), and to the clothes shops, barbers and salons,” she told us. “…Personally and professionally, I support Marc Bean wholeheartedly in his endeavours.

“This business (Paradise Games) will bring diversification to the area, and they have done a stellar job. It’s a beautiful environment and exudes a premier business venture.”

She described the interior as “a white and Earth tone colour scheme”.

“All the computer equipment and kiosks look very high-end,” she added.

“Marc comes from a family of entrepreneurs and we welcome this new business to North Hamilton.”
