Brush fire
At approximately 1:20 pm on Tuesday December 10th, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a brush fire near Southside Road, St David’s.
Fire Service spokesperson Lieutenant Leonard Davis reported that “The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the mentioned incident with two fire appliances staffed with 6 firefighters. The fire crews took approximately 10 minutes to arrive on scene. Upon their arrival they discovered a large area of brush approximately 400’ x 30’ fully involved in fire. The duty crew proceeded to extinguish the fire using 2 ½ and 1 ½ hose lines and over 4,500 gallons of water.”
Sergeant Shannon Caisey stated that “the fire took approximately 45 minutes to bring under due to the high winds, thick brush and uneven terrain. Once the fire was brought under control, the fire crew remained on scene to extinguish any hot-spots to prevent the potential of re-ignition. Upon investigation it was discovered that the fire was caused by dry brush making contact with a hot lawnmower exhaust pipe.”
Dryer fire
At approximately 4:25 pm on Tuesday December 10th, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a dryer on fire at #3 Cameron Close, Smith’s. The fire crews arrived on scene at approximately 4:34pm. The fire was extinguished prior to the Fire Service arrival by a caring member of the public. On behalf of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, Fire Service spokesperson Lieutenant Leonard Davis would like to thank Mr. Michael Terceira for coming to the aid of the family. “As a direct result of Mr. Terceira proper use of a fire extinguisher, the potential of the fire increasing was eliminated.” The cause of the fire was a result of ignition of lint in the lint tray.

House fire
At approximately 11:20 pm on Tuesday December 10th, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a 2-story dwelling involved in fire near Bostock Hill East, Paget. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident with 5 fire appliances staffed with 13 firefighters.
Sergeant Danon McGowan stated that “upon the arrival of the Fire Service, there was thick black smoke and flames seen during our approach. Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus and equipped with a 1½” hose line began to extinguish the fire. Once the fire was brought under control, the firefighters made entry into the premise to carry out ventilation and an internal search for potential victims. The dwelling sustains structural damage and extensive smoke damage.
The Fire Service spokesperson Lieutenant Leonard Davis would like to express the gratitude of a The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service to off duty Firefighter Nakia Pearson and unknown bystander for their quick thinking in using a garden hose to contain the fire prior to the arrival of the fire service. Lieutenant Davis stated that “this is an unfortunate incident which has occurred. This fire had the potential to be a lot worse had these two individuals not intervened.”
At present the fire is still currently under investigation.
