The world is united in mourning today following the death of freedom fighter Nelson Mandela.
Mr Mandela endured 27 years in a prison cell for his actions in the fight against the racist Apartheid regime before becoming South Africa’s first black President. He went on to become one of the world’s most revered statesman and unified his homeland while preaching forgiveness.
The 95-year-old had been receiving intense medical care for several months for a lung infection before he died yesterday at his Johannesburg home, surrounded by his family.
In South Africa his passing sparked an outpouring of grief, with crowds gathering across the country and outside his home to sing songs and remember their “greatest son”.
In Bermuda, churches are preparing to hold remembrance services to coincide with Mandela’s state funeral.
Glenn Fubler, who founded the Bermuda Anti-Apartheid Movement in the 1980s, said: “This is the end of an era but Nelson Mandela’s spirit and example will be an inspiration for generations to come. His legacy is of facing challenges and overcoming them, while maintaining a heart of peace.”
