The first Mid-Year Meeting to be held in Bermuda of Insuralex, a worldwide network of independent insurance and reinsurance lawyers, attracted over 120 attendees to its recent seminar, of which 37 people were from overseas, representing over 12 countries. MJM Limited is the Bermuda member of Insuralex and hosted the group this month.

Key attendees included Chief Justice, the Hon. Ian R.C. Kawaley and Minister of Economic Development, the Hon. Dr. Grant Gibbons, JP, MP.

Devereux Chambers, with whom MJM Barristers & Attorneys has strong links, were the guest speakers at the seminar at XL conference centre, addressing the audience on Aggregation in the Reinsurance Context and the Insurability of Fines and Penalties. Speakers included: Colin Wynter, QC (Chambers & Partners Insurance Silk of the year 2012); Richard Harrison, Leading Insurance Junior; and Andrew Burns, Leading Insurance Junior and co-author of the Law of Reinsurance with Colin Edelman QC, published by Oxford Press.

Alan Dunch, Director, MJM Limited, says: “The presentation by Devereux Chambers was both engaging and thought provoking. The event was a unique gathering of Bermuda’s insurance executives and Insuralex members and attorneys. We hope that the event will drive new business to Bermuda and we have already begun to plan for some of these lawyers to return to Bermuda in 2014.”

Bill Perry, President of Insuralex, said: “The Mid-Year Meeting was an excellent showcase of the Bermuda insurance industry and its international connections as well as what Bermuda has to offer as a business jurisdiction. We would like to thank MJM Limited for hosting the meeting and for their hospitality. Aside from seminars and meetings, we thoroughly enjoyed the time spent on the Island partaking in activities such as sailing, golf and watching some of the Rugby Classic. ”
