So it looks like Gareth Bale is going to become the world’s most expensive player when he finally joins Real Madrid.
Although if the pace of this transfer is anything to go by — think Jan Molby in full flight — then it might be August 2014 until he signs the deal.
That won’t happen, or at least Spurs will hope not, seeing as they’ve spent, and are poised to spend, most of the £80m+ that’s set to come their way.
Willian was close until Chelsea stepped in but Soldado is on board — and scoring — as is Paulinho, Capoue and Chadli. More recruits are expected.
It may be premature to say it but flogging Bale for an astronomical fee could prove to be a masterstroke. He’s a very talented boy, obviously, but, you have to say, overpriced. The scrutiny will be on him like never before at the Bernabeu but, if he can deal with the weight of the transfer fee, he’ll be a success.
If I was a Spurs fan, though, I’d already be over him.
Title-decider?
All this Bale talk serves as a distraction from a potential early-season title decider which, of course, is a ridiculous thing to say.
However, Man United versus Chelsea on Monday night will be a humdinger and will give the winner crucial early-season momentum. Who knows? It may be decisive.
TOMORROW
All times 11am unless stated
Fulham v Arsenal
8:45am
Things are never quite as bad they seem and, suddenly, after a European win and reports of interest in Real Madrid players (see opposite page) maybe Gunners fans will feel a little more optimistic. Scott Parker is a good buy for Fulham but Arsenal should get back on track with a win here.
Prediction: 1-2
Everton v West Brom
Nicolas Anelka is out, mourning the death of his agent, which won’t help the Baggies after a lacklustre opening-day defeat.
Everton looked enterprising but a little shaky at the back — a Roberto Martinez team then! Ross Barkley is clearly ready to seize his chance.
Prediction: 3-1
Hull v Norwich
A game where we should see how good Hull are after their no-contest at Stamford Bridge. First home game for them but the Canaries looked on the ball in their first match, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel a goal threat.
Prediction: 2-2
Newcastle v West Ham
The Toon has a miserably schooling at the hands of Man City and the fear is they’ve dangerously stagnated. Alan Pardew’s verdict they did alright for most of the game bordered on the delusional.
Prediction: 1-2
Southampton v Sunderland
The Black Cats are basically starting from scratch as Paolo Di Canio rebuilds the squad.
Saints are a couple of years ahead in that process and have new record signing Daniel Osvaldo waiting in the wings for his debut.
Prediction: 2-0
Stoke v Crystal Palace
Relegation candidates? Maybe a touch harsh on Stoke after a battling display at Liverpool. But another game that will give crucial pointers towards both teams’ fortunes this season.
Prediction: 1-0
Aston Villa v Liverpool
1:30pm
Big test for Liverpool who look slick but still not clinical enough. Villa, on the other hand, have beaten Arsenal and were unlucky not get a point at Chelsea in midweek. Plus, they have the Beast Benteke, who will prove the difference.
Prediction: 2-1
SUNDAY
Cardiff v Man City
12pm
First match Cardiff were out of their depth , Man City were outstanding. New manager Manuel Pellegrini has the Blues pressing higher up the pitch and they will swarm all over the Welsh side.
Prediction: 0-3
Tottenham v Swansea
12pm
Swansea are an impressive outfit but you get the feeling Andre Villas-Boas is building something at the Lane. Exciting new blood in the squad and real attacking verve. Home win. Who needs Bale?
Prediction: 2-0
MONDAY
Man Utd v Chelsea
4pm
Early signs from Chelsea are that Jose Mourinho is ready to work his magic again. Combative yet full of attacking options, they are many people’s tips for the title.
This clash gives United and Moyes the chance to shoot those claims down as premature. Wake-up call for the champions.
Prediction: 1-2
