The Bermuda Brazilian Football School made history in their fifth annual Cultural and Educational Football Tour in Denmark on Sunday with a bronze medal in their final tournament.
The BBFS took a difficult 4-1 loss on Sunday morning in the semi-final vs Slangelse B2 of Denmark. While hoping to have been able to take home gold for Bermuda, the team held a tactical meeting and resolved to do whatever necessary to bring home a medal to Bermuda as they were slated to play for the bronze medal in the consolation final later that day.
After 20 previous games in 14 days the team was tired but showed great mental strength beyond their years to win the game.
The final game pitted the BBFS against Hong GF in a very competitively fought match by both sides. Ultimately, strong defense and goaltending prevailed, causing the game to end in a 0-0 tie. The BBFS were then awarded the win and the bronze medal by virtue of their 3-2 lead in penalties.
It was a great scene for the young Bermudian footballers as fans and players from across Denmark rushed the field in celebration and to congratulate the team, chanting “Bermuda! Bermuda!”
The BBFS made history for Bermuda by reaching the Dana Cup 1/8 finals (Europe's third largest youth tournament). They also faced pro youth academy teams in the Brondy Cup and only lost to the top three teams.
The icing on the cake was placing third in the A U13 group of the Vildbjerg Cup, Europe's 4th largest youth tournament.
The team will take a much needed day of rest before returning to Bermuda on Wednesday.
