Italy’s early training sessions have been overshadowed by racial abuse of striker Mario Balotelli.
As the squad prepared at the Coverciano centre, Florence, on Wednesday, the AC Milan and former Manchester City player was targeted by some spectators.
Those ‘fans’ are reported to have shouted “black piece of s***” at him as he trained. The 23-year-old did not react to the insults but is said to have told team-mates: “This only happens in Rome and Florence.”
Manager Cesare Prandelli’s team face England, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D at the World Cup.
Meanwhile, England boss Roy Hodgson said he does not wish his players a happy birthday.
His response came after being questioned over the fact Yaya Toure accused Man City over not showing him any respect after failing to wish him many happy returns on his special day.
Incredibly, the Ivory Coast star has taken umbrage at the perceived snub and fuelled speculation he may look for a transfer.
Asked if he wished his players a happy birthday, Hodgson said: “No. They don’t wish me happy birthday either. I regard those things as being flippant, I don’t think it has anything to do with being a professional footballer. I do not interfere in their private lives.”
