Can Selah Tuzo defend her Heritage Day Junior Classic title on Monday? The young runner ran 12:16 in the two-mile race last year but could be challenged by Jade Johnston.

West End Athletic Club vice president Lee Tucker told the Bermuda Sun: “Jade Johnston has shown outstanding form this year and has defeated Selah Tuzo on a  couple of occasions.”

David Darrell won the boys’ race last year, but is over the age limit for 2014.

Tucker said runner-up Tyler Smith ran a 10:42. Smith is recovering from a broken arm he suffered late in April.

The current record-holders are Henry Talbot in 10:16 and Kyrah ‘Special k’ Scraders in 12:14.

Mr Tucker said the Heritage Day Junior Classic has “helped develop some outstanding middle distance and distance runners”.

The race takes place on Monday, starting at 9:30am near the Supermart on Front Street.

The race is by invitation only and all runners who received an invite to participate should let the race directors know as soon as possible.

“The invitation has already been sent out and we’re looking for them to return it. If they don’t, they can’t enter and won’t be accepted.

“We’re looking for somwhere between 75 and 100 runners,” Tucker said.

The race is once again sponsored by Lister Insurance.
