The Degroote Bermudian Alumni Dalhousie/BIOS Fund is 90 per cent of the way to its $1-million goal.  With the generous support of alumni and friends in Canada and Bermuda nearly $900,000 has been raised for student internships and faculty exchanges.

“Welcoming Dalhousie students to the institute for international research and experiential learning opportunities is always an exciting time for BIOS,” said Dr. Bill Curry, President and Director at BIOS. “The students have a unique experience living at a scientific research institution and working alongside world-class scientists on state-of-the-art research projects.”

Floyd Dykeman, Vice President, External, Dalhousie University, noted that “The partnership with BIOS strengthens ties between the two leading oceans research and education institutions.  It also helps prepare our future leaders in oceans research.”

The Degroote family contributed $500,000 to the fund and the remainder has come from Dalhousie alumni, private corporations and supporters of oceans research in general said Dykeman.

The fund’s success will be celebrated at an event hosted by Dalhousie University for its alumni and friends on May 15 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.
