Government House has announced that Mr Ian Kawaley, the Chief Justice, will take on the role of Acting Governor from Thursday, 8 May to Friday, 9 May. Both the Governor and Deputy Governor will be away at that time, respectively, visiting the Bermuda Regiment at its overseas camp in Ontario and at a meeting in Miami on hurricane and disaster management.
The formal terms of the Government House announcement were:
“After consultation with the Premier and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and in conformance with Section 19(1)(b) of the Constitution, Her Majesty has instructed the Secretary of State to designate Chief Justice Ian Kawaley to act in the office of Governor and to perform the functions of that office accordingly during this period. The Chief Justice took the relevant Oath on Wednesday, 7 May.”
