And how do you like your mayonnaise?
The Bermuda’s Best brand continues to expand by adding a 15-ounce bottle, 22-ounce squeeze bottle to its mayonnaise line, which introduced a 30-ounce bottle last year.
But the brand has also added evaporated milk to its ever-expanding product line.
Gary Mello, research and development, and sales manager for Karibuni Ltd, which owns the Bermuda Best brand, told the Bermuda Sun: “We had the original 30-ounce bottle — that’s the most popular size in Bermuda. The second most popular size in Bermuda is the 15-ounce, which is half of the mommy bottle, so to speak.
“We also have the squeeze 22-ounce bottle, which literally sits upside down. It is a fat-neck bottle. You simply pop the top, squeeze and put up the top again. There’s no mess, no fuss.
“That’s terrific coming up for the holiday times or the summer when people just want to grab and go for a picnic. You don’t have to worry about bugs getting in the jar.”
Mr Mello said the owners of Karibuni, Desmond and Selina Mello, came up with the idea of adding the other sizes to the mayonnaise line.
“We can’t live as a one-item company. If we’re going to have mayonnaise we have to cover the full-service for the customer. The next two most popular items are the squeeze and the 15-ounce.”
He claimed that Hellman’s used to have about 85 to 90 per cent of mayonnaise market share in Bermuda.
Last year he went to Cains, the number three brand of mayonnaise in the US, but with a large market share in the northeast portion of the States, to do a taste test of various types of mayonnaise.
After tasting about 30 different types, Mr Mello narrowed it down to two mayonnaise types. They took a variation of Hellman’s and made it creamier.
“We put it out there and asked people to ‘Please try and compare (it to Hellman’s).”
He said Bermuda’s Best mayonnaise has been able to grab a large market share because of its taste and its better price. It normally retails for $4.85 but can be purchased for less when on special.
Since then the company has added evaporated milk, which retails for $0.99 as its regular price.
Mr Mello said when they decide to offer a new product, it has to taste better than the number one brand on the island “because no one chases number two or number three”.
“Carnation has 80 to 85 per cent of the market and Pet the other 15, but there’s no sense targeting Pet so we targeted Carnation.”
The evaporated milk has less water and thus is creamier.
He added it has to be significantly cheaper than the number one brand, that way the consumers can benefit.
The company also makes Bermuda’s Best codfish and Bermuda’s Best chourico.
