Deadline approaching for Government scholarships and awards
With the deadline of Tuesday, April 1st fast approaching, the Ministry of Education and Economic Development is reminding students that applications for the Bermuda Government Scholarship and Awards are still being accepted and forms are available online at www.moed.bm. The scholarships and awards include, Teacher Training Awards; Mature Student Awards; Further Education Awards and Bermuda Government Scholarships.
In recent years, the Ministry of Education and Economic Development has assisted students to attend universities such as Emory University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of California (Berkeley), The New England Institute of Technology, Dalhousie University, St. Mary’s University, Mt. St. Vincent University, Hampton University, Kingston University, Pennsylvania State University, McGill University, and Andrews University, among numerous others.
Areas of study have included primary and early years’ education, child and youth study, theology, law, social work, nursing, medicine, mechanical engineering, biomedical studies, architecture, international business, and many others.
The details of the scholarships and awards are as follows:
Teacher Training Awards valued at $15,000 per year for up to three years and are given to promising Bachelor of Education candidates studying subjects where there are shortages of local candidates, such as geography, English language, arts, mathematics, modern foreign languages and special education. Awardees are expected to return to Bermuda and teach within the Bermuda Public School System;
Mature student Awards valued at $15,000 for up to three years for successful candidates who are over the age of 35 and who wish to return to post-secondary education;
Further Education Awards valued at between $1,500 and $10,000 and awarded to students who are in financial need studying at university; and,
Bermuda Government Scholarships valued at up to $35,000 for tuition and accommodation for Bermuda’s top scholars. This scholarship is tenable for up to four years.
