The Women In Sports Expo will now be held biennially although the accompanying running race remains as a yearly event.

The Expo in 2013 saw basketball star Lisa Leslie take part as the event’s special guest.

Donna Watson, the president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association said in a press release: “With that being such a huge event to put on each year we have decided to have the full expo every other year.

“What we will continue with will be the 5k Run/walk and Girls Rock One mile.

“We want to continue with the Women in Sport theme and encourage young girls and women to have an event every year.

“ This is not just for women in sports but all women of all ages to come out and participate.”

A few new twists have been added to the event, with a few new races — which are open to all women — included.

The full list of race options are now: one mile run child/5k walk; one mile run child/5k run; 5k walk adult or child combination; 5k run adult or child/5k walk adult or child; 5k run adult or child combination.

All of these mother/daughter categories will receive a gift certificate for a hotel which they can use for Mother’s Day.

We will be awarding monetary prizes to the top three women in the 5K run, while there will be gift certificates for the top three girls (U18) in the Girls Rock One mile.

There will be a plaque awarded to the company with the most participants and monetary awards to the National Governing Body with the most participants and the school with the most participants.

The participants can enter as an individual and also as part of a team.

Watson added: “We are excited about this event as there has never been a race with this sort of twist and we feel it is a great mother-daughter bonding event.”

The event will take place on Sunday, April 27 at 3pm. The first 400 to sign up will receive t-shirts, bags and goodies.

Both races will start and finish at Argus as they are our title sponsor.

Watson added: “Hopefully we can bring out the moms, grandmothers and children and have a great day.”

Sign-up is on www.racedayworld.com or forms will be delivered to schools, companies and gyms, and they can be dropped off at the BNAA office on Burnaby Hill.
