Davika Hill is a natural hair blogger and runs Naptually Me — a blog focusing on hair care.

The blog started in October and has grown as the natural hair community in Bermuda becomes larger. “I was very inspired to share my love of natural hair with others so I decided to start blogging about it”, she says.

Hill has a YouTube channel and a Facebook page and is inspired by the natural hair bloggers in the States. They put on events and there’s a real community out there. All the bloggers seem to know each other as well.

“I wanted to provide that for the natural hair care community here in Bermuda.”

Davika is hosting a product swap tonight at Chewstick from 6pm onwards.  She said most women with natural hair try an array of products before finding what works for them.

The product swap gives us a chance to try new products without having to pay for them and it also gives guests a chance to get rid of the products they’ve collected that they don’t use. There is no entry fee but participants must bring at least one product to swap for something else.

Your earliest memory?

One of my earliest memories is my two-year-old birthday party. I remember that I got sick at the party and I was upset that I couldn’t eat the cake.

What were you like in school?

I was really shy and quiet, maybe a little nerdy. Most people that knew me in school can’t believe how outgoing I am now.

Who is your hero/heroine?

I have some really awesome women in my life, both family members and some that I’ve met who have inspired me to be a better person in my personal life and professional life.

They’ve helped me in my growth from a young woman into an adult.

Human trait you value most in others?

I love when people are supportive of each other. I’m lucky to have family and friends who have been supportive of me and I think it’s a beautiful thing when a community is willing to come together to support positive, progressive growth in an individual.

Your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is coming to the end of my life and realizing that I didn’t accomplish my goals and dreams.

That fear motivates me to work hard to make sure that I do. Especially because there are a lot of things I’d like to accomplish.

Your ultimate ambition?

I’ve always wanted to work for myself so my ultimate goal in life is to own multiple, successful businesses.

Describe yourself in three words...

Creative, compassionate, bubbly.

A dream location for a home?

I’d love to own a loft apartment in NYC.

What keeps you up at night?

Usually if I’m up at night I’m either working on one of my many ideas or thinking of new ones.

Name some favourite:

TV shows/TV series

The Office.

Books:

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche. I just finished
reading it and it was the most beautiful novel I’ve ever read.

From the setting, to the way the characters intertwined with each other, everything about it just drew me in.

Adiche is a wonderful author and I’ve just started reading another one of her books, Purple Hibiscus.

Dishes:

My favourite food is macaroni and cheese. I have a really good recipe for it too. In fact, when attending a gathering I like to encourage macaroni and cheese to be put on the menu and I offer to make it.

Vacation spots:

I’ve been to Thailand
before for a mission trip and it was so beautiful there. I’d like to go back and spend a summer there.

Your attitude to exercise?

I’ve always been inconsistent with exercise but I do enjoy it.

I find that it gives me great mental focus and improves my attitude. I always work better after I’ve had a good workout.

Your proudest achievement?

One of the things I’m most proud of is graduating with my Associates in Human Services from Bermuda College this past May.

It’s taken me a while to figure out what I wanted to study in school and now that I’ve found something I love I’m really excited to be working towards it.

This fall I’ll be starting my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education and my goal is to obtain a Masters degree in Art Education or Art Therapy.

Pet peeve?

My number one pet peeve is being patronized.

Although it is hard to hear the truth sometimes, I’d rather have someone just tell it to me straight rather than beat around the bush.

If you won a million dollars, what would you do with it?

If I won a million dollars I would use some to pay for school and I’ve always said that I would buy my parents a house.

They have done a lot for me and continue to do so and I would love to be able to take care of them.

What would you most like to be remembered for?

I would most like to be remembered for putting a smile on someone’s face. It may sound simple or cliché but I truly love being able to brighten someone’s day whether it’s through a conversation or even something as simple as a smile or a hug.

I also want to be remembered for having inspired others to follow their dreams and goals.

Most important lesson life has taught you?

Life has taught me that family is important, always be humble and willing to learn because there’s always an opportunity to learn, it’s important to give back to your community, and to not be afraid to roll up your sleeves to dig in and do some hard work.
