Luis Suarez was embroiled in a new ‘bite’ scandal after appearing to take a chunk out of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder.
Uruguay qualified at the expense of the Italians thanks to a 1-0 win yesterday but the talk was all about whether Suarez, who has been involved in biting incidents twice before, will now be slapped with a hefty FIFA ban.
“It was ridiculous not to send Suarez off. It is clear, clear-cut,” Chiellini told Italian television station Rai TV.
Italy manager Cesare Prandelli, who said he would resign after the defeat, added: “I didn’t see the images of Suarez but I did see the bite marks in Chiellini’s shoulder.”
Uruguay captain Diego Lugano defended Suarez: “What did you see? You saw this, really? You need to show me because I didn’t see anything.” In Group D’s other game, England played out a poor 0-0 draw with Costa Rica, who had already qualified.
In Group C, Colombia beat Japan 4-1 and Greece stunned Ivory Coast with a last-minute penalty to win 2-1 and qualify.
