Bermuda prepares to host Caribbean Junior Squash Championships

Bermuda’s top junior squash players take on the region’s finest when the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships get under way on Sunday at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

The event will feature more than 100 players — including 25 of Bermuda’s top juniors — in boys’ and girls’ divisions from under-13 to under-19 age categories and runs until Saturday, July 19.

It’s the pinnacle of junior squash in the Caribbean and gives the island’s local talent the chance to take on the best on their home courts.

“Bermuda has multiple players in high seeding positions with every chance of winning medals,” said BSRA assistant director and national coach Runa Reta.

Young Bermudians to watch out for include Emma Keane in the Girls’ Under-19 division, who will have to beat Guyana’s number-two ranked player to reach the semi-finals.

Also in the mix for medals will be Dylan Pratt and Anaya Smith, who are seeded three and four in the Boys’ Under 15 and Under 13 respectively. 

Charlotte Toogood will be looking to improve on her Girls’ Under-13 fourth-place finish in 2013, as will Olivia Lindsey in the Girls’ Under-15 competition.

Thanks to an extremely tough draw, the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-17 and Under-19 divisions will require some huge performances from Tiye Williams, Susanna Armano, Nazhir Smith, Dylan Muldoon, Beckett Simmons and Kion Knights.

The event, which is sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda Foundation and the Department of Youth & Sports, is a huge undertaking on behalf of the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

BSRA director Patrick Foster said: “It’s a great event that requires the efforts of a lot of people to pull it together. With over 140 people arriving in the next two days we are all thrilled and working hard to make this a great event.”

Play begins following the official opening ceremony on Sunday at 9am. The individual championship runs for the first three days of the event, with the finals to be held on the evening of Tuesday, July 15.

Following this, teams of five players compete for each country over four days of competition for the team title from July 16-19.
