Watch it: Did they win for music, or equal rights?

They swept the Grammys — but were Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feted chiefly for their support of gays?

It was arguably the biggest snub in the recent history of the Grammys.

Kendrick Lamar was nominated in seven categories,  including best new artist — but went home empty-handed.

Instead the hip-hop categories were swept by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

There were many talked about moments on music’s big night but this was the biggest one of all.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. who are white, won best rap performance, best rap song and best rap album — beating out the likes of Jay-Z, Drake, Kanye West, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar.

The duo also snagged best new artist.

In my view and that of many others, Kendrick Lamar is the best hip-hop artist right now and his debut album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City is the best rap album in the last few years.

But he walked away Grammy-less at the end of the night after having arguably the best performance of the night with Imagine Dragons.

The twittersphere was not happy with the snub:

@anthxnyjoel: macklemore beating drake, kendrick, kanye, and jay z for best rap album makes me uncomfortable

@PatMcGee18: The fact that Macklemore won best rap album is a disgrace to hip hop #kingkendrick #GKMC

Here is my take on the situation.

The most important argument is the duo’s support and acceptance of the LBGT community. On my Facebook page, I posted:

“The fact that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis swept all the Hip Hop categories is ridiculous. Supporting equal rights/gay marriage is great but that should have no influence on awards handed out based on talent.”

My opinion is that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are getting accolades because of their support for the gay community along with their song, Same Love. It’s not like their talent is on a par with Eminem.

Macklemore sent texts to Lamar apologizing for winning best album. And rightly so. I mean, his music is more hip pop than hip hop. n

Aside from this controversy, another big thing was Pharrell’s hat, weirdly enough. Dude had on a large brown hat, reminiscent of something Smokey Bear would wear.

Within minutes of his arrival, his hat was trending on Twitter and midway through the evening, it had its own Twitter account.

The hat has become the subject of many memes floating around the Internet. While it was ridiculous, I didn’t think it was that bad.

Singer Lorde was also trending. Not because of a hat, but thanks to a really weird performance.

The 17-year-old hit the stage early to perform her hit Royals and I was sure she was going to blow us away. Instead, she performed a really creepy version of the song and her movements made her look like she was in the middle of an exorcism.

Not to mention the horrible lighting that made her young face look like that of a grandmother.

As I predicted in this column last week, Beyonce and Jay-Z opened the show, performing their hit Drunk In Love. A lot of folk seemed to be underwhelmed with the performance, but I loved how simple and sexy it was.

The one person who seemed to be having fun all night was Taylor Swift

She was getting down during Bey and Jay’s performance and stood the whole time while Lamar and Imagine Dragons performed.
