More Bermuda residents owned tablets than desktops computers for the first time last year.

A total of 56 per cent of residents owned a tablet whereas 54 per cent owned a desktop computer.

Laptop computers continued to be the predominant device in residents homes at 82 per cent according to a  survey conducted by the Regulatory Authority.

But will tablets surpass them in the next five years?

Philip Micallef, CEO of the Regulatory Authority, told the Bermuda Sun: Local and international trends indicate that tablet use has increased since becoming increasingly popular in recent years; however, the jury is still out on whether tablets will become the predominant device in homes.

“As the technology sector is a fast changing industry, it is possible that within the next five years, the invention of a new mobile device may overtake the popularity of both tablets and PCs, and become more useful in both personal and professional settings.

He added: “Studies have shown that the biggest trend today is the use of multiple devices at once, as the tablet has not yet become a perfect substitute for personal computers.

“In order for tablets to become the most prominent device used at home, their development must be focused on incorporating all of the capabilities currently supported by PCs.”

Todd Martin, general manager at P-Tech told the Sun, Bermuda usually follows the lead of the United States.

Tablets are huge

“The big thing now are tablets.

“There are so many Chinese companies who are doing their own version of a tablet. Everybody is making one.”

Mr Martin said companies are jumping on this because they see it as a growth market.

“But there are limits to what they can do. Everybody wants a device that they can plug a USB into. You can’t expand their memory so much and there’s a limited amount of memory you can do on them. Samsung is coming out with a line of pro tablets. It allows people to be more productive. You can have four applications running at the same time.”

Mr Martin said the variation in the sizes and functions in tablets, means P-Tech will not be able to carry the whole range because there are too many.

“People here are looking for that smartPC, which has the Windows 8 tablet with the separating keyboard.

“It’s far more productive than your standard tablet or an Apple tablet because it does have an USB port.”

He added once its connected to the docking station there are more USB ports to use, which increases its functionality.

“It’s way more productive and it’s more mobile.

“Right now computers are becoming incidental. It’s becoming more about what your Internet can do. With the cloud, portability is going to be everything.

“You can snyc that with your smartTv so the size of the screen is also going to be incidental.”
