An imperious run by Kenyan Richard Kessio blitzed the field and saw him retain his Bermuda Men’s Marathon title in Hamilton this morning.
Kessio claimed the third Bermuda Marathon win of his career, adding to his success in 2010 and 2013 in dominant fashion after breaking second-placed Teklu Deneke around the 15-mile mark to cross the finish line in a time of two hours 24 minutes eight seconds.
The conditions were easier than last year when Kessio was taken to hospital immediately after the race suffering from exhaustion. A year on, the champion found conditions more to his liking and responded with a faster time and a promise to return next year and go for win number four.
Kessio said: “I am pleased with the race. I did it in 2:17 in 2010 and 2:27 last year so this year was better. The race went good and I enjoyed it.
“I had a nice battle with the Ethiopian guy but after 15 miles he just dropped so I had to go by myself. But I found that easier.
“I’m happy with the time but I think I could have run faster. Maybe next time. It means a lot to me to defend my title.
“I really enjoy coming here and I hope to be back next year. It was a bit easier than last year. I was surprised by the margin of victory but I feel good, although a little bit tired!”
The Women’s Marathon was won by Valentyna Poltavska, of Ukraine.
