Clinical Wells on target again (update)

Nahki Wells scored on his full debut for Huddersfield Town today to make it two in two since his club record move from Bradford.

However, it wasn’t enough to stop the Terriers going down 2-1 to QPR at Loftus Road in the Championship clash.

QPR went into the lead through former Burnley striker Charlie Austin in the 55th minute but less than a quarter of an hour later, Wells hauled Town level.

The 23-year-old Bermudian headed past former England keeper Rob Green after a cross from Adam Hammill.

But Austin wasn’t done and he fired Harry Redknapp’s side into the lead again with 11 minutes remaining and the home side saw out the win to claim all three points.

Terriers midfielder Jonathan Hogg praised the impact of new striker Wells. "Nahki looks a handful, doesn’t he? He’s only a small man, but he puts himself around and doesn’t mind getting kicked about," he told the club's official website.

"We’ve only seen a few days of him in training but he’s not shy – he’s settling in quite nicely."

Town manager Mark Robins said: "I thought the first-half was the best we’ve played since I’ve come to the club.

"In the second-half we told the lads to be confident, believe in themselves and keep playing in the same manner, because we had them on the ropes; we could have been three up. 

"They were always going to come into the game and the second-half was never going to be like the first because they will throw bodies forward. We talked about that and how our game management had to be different." 

He added: "No team had scored here against them in the second-half this season, so we conquered that challenge, but we let ourselves down with the set play. That was a knife to the stomach really, because we played so well. 

 “We managed to get the ball in the net, but then we were under pressure a little bit. We wanted to add a little bit of height and then we were hit with a sucker-punch. We kept plugging away and we tried to get something at the death.

"I know how good we can be, but we have to do it for 90 minutes – not 55. We should have taken a point today from a really difficult place to come."
