The Golden Globes were a fashionista’s dream come true.
From pale fabrics with clean lines, to bright red and sparkles, the actresses brought their ‘A’ game to the official start of awards season.
The fashion was mostly classic with few daring looks, but it was still a lot of fun.
My standout had to be newcomer Lupita Nyong’o. The 12 Years a Slave star wore a fabulous red Ralph Lauren strapless dress with a built in cape. Lupita accessorized very simply with stud earrings and a ring.
Many said this look was similar to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford white dress with a cap, that she wore at the Oscars two years ago, but Lupita wore this dress better than Gwyneth and besides, her face is just stunning.
Also in red was Amy Adams, star of American Hustle. She walked away as best actress in a comedy or musical.
Amy wore a red colour block Valentino dress with a deep v-neck. When she stepped out of the limo, she had a cape but someone must have told her Lupita had one, so she ditched it.
Next up was the beautiful and very pregnant Kerry Washington in an ivory Balenciaga gown. Kerry was glowing and was probably the most beautiful she has ever looked.
She was nominated for best actress, TV but lost to Robin Wright of House of Cards.
The worst dressed for me had to be Julia Roberts in a Dolce & Gabanna black column dress. It would have been a decent look but she wore a white collared shirt under the dress and accessorized with a sparkly belt.
It really was a “what was she thinking?” kind of look, coupled with an ‘80s beehive and heavy eye makeup. Julia isn’t really a style icon but still, she could’ve done better.
Aside from the fashion, hosts Amy Pohler and Tina Fey hit it out the park. They were hilarious, slightly inappropriate and the perfect choice for hosts.
Their one-liners were excellent. “Gravity is nominated for best film. It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”
Another good one: “Matthew McConaughey is here. For his role in Dallas Buyers Club, he lost 45 pounds, or what actresses call ‘being in a movie’.”
It would have been a truly great evening if 12 Years a Slave (see page 26) had swept all the categories, as I believe it deserved to. It did win for best film but director Steve McQueen and actors Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o and Michael Fassbender were shut out of their categories.
Hopefully they will win Academy Awards.
