The Bermuda Powerboat Association has donated $3,000 to St John Ambulance in recognition of the assistance they provide throughout the race season.
Rear commodore Paul Wellman and commodore Jody Carreiro handed over the cheque to commissioner Stephen Gunn at the St John Ambulance headquarters on Point Finger Road.
Mr Wellman told the Bermuda Sun: “We can’t race without them — no St John Ambulance, no race. We depend on them every season. They are volunteers so we get together to give back to them.”
Mr Carreiro added: “A lot of the guys that race are my mates and you don’t want to see anything happen to them. I know when these guys are here they are safe.”
Mr Gunn said the presence of St John Amulance at races was for spectator, as well as competitor, safety.
Mr Gunn said: “We love to support them and we are grateful to the support they give us.”
He added: “Without us the Powerboat Association aren’t allowed to race — it’s in their bylaws. For us the donation is important for us to serve the community. It costs money for us to get to these events — it costs $250 just to get the ambulance out.”
