Cup Match star dies (Update)

Former Somerset Cup Match star and Bermuda cricketer Anthony ‘Pacer’ Edwards has died from injuries sustained in a road collision, the Police have confirmed.

Fast bowler Mr Edwards, 51, who made a name for himself for Devonshire Recreation Club in the 1970s, was in a critical condition after his motorcycle collided with a truck on South Road on Thursday, February 6.

Mr Edwards emigrated from Jamaica as a child and went on to enjoy a distinguished international cricket career. After gaining initial recognition as a member of the 1979 Bermuda Under-19 team that won the International Youth Tournament in Canada, he starred for his country up until 1994 when the island came close to qualifying for the World Cup.

In ICC Trophy matches, Edwards claimed 44 wickets at an average of 17.36, with best figures of six for 38.

A Police spokesman said in a press release: “Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 51-year-old Anthony Edwards, who has succumbed to serious injuries suffered in a road traffic collision on Thursday, February 6 at 3pm.

“Mr Edwards had been travelling in a westerly direction on his motorcycle when he was involved in a collision with an open-back intermediate truck that was exiting Marley Beach Drive in Southampton Parish. 

“Mr Edwards is the third road traffic fatality for 2014 and Acting Sergeant Sean Hassel of the Roads Policing Unit is the lead investigating officer and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to the family.

“Any witnesses to this collision or anyone who may have information as to the whereabouts of Mr Edwards prior to the collision is asked to contact Acting Sergeant Hassel at 247-1200 or alternatively on his e-mail: [email protected]
