Denim Day for Caribbean flood relief
As an Associate Member of CARICOM, the Bermuda Government is proud to support the efforts of the West Indian Association (Bermuda) in raising funds to help those affected by the recent flooding in the Caribbean, by hosting a Denim Day on February 14th.
The Denim Day will involve the Civil/Public Service and the Island’s public schools.
The public will recall that on December 24th, 2013, a low-level, high impact trough system passed through the Eastern Caribbean region, dumping enormous quantities of rain over parts of Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and continued during Christmas day.
Over 33,000 people were affected by the torrential downpour and 15 lives were lost in addition to livelihoods, homes and vital infrastructure.
Additionally, the West Indian Association will be hosting the “Give from the Heart - Valentine’s Night Caribbean Party” on Saturday February 15th at the Police Recreation Club. This event is another in a series designed to raise funds to assist those Caribbean Islands affected.
As the Chair of the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO), the Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Dunkley, JP, MP, said today, “The goal is to get the funds to the agencies who are directly assisting those in need. So the Bermuda Government's Valentine's Denim Day fundraiser would be in support of the victims of Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. We tend to take for granted how fortunate we are here in Bermuda, but Mother Nature is indiscriminate and disaster can strike at any time; so as an Associate Member of CARICOM, we are pleased to do whatever we can to help our friends and neighbours to our south.”
Minimum contributions of $5 for adults and $2 for students are encouraged and donations can be made directly to the West Indian Association (Bermuda) through the special relief fund HSBC Account No: 011 055 662 001.
