In this era of change, a society is best served when it fosters the release of the full potential of its people. As such, Imagine Bermuda has collaborated with local Education Stakeholders, regarding the use of Khan Academy and other online tools. These facilities offer a free resource representing a Global movement to empower learners – K-12 & adults renewing themselves. ‘Khan’ to-date is being used by 10 million individuals per month, across the Globe.
In an effort to broaden awareness of this facility in Bermuda, we have organized a Community Meeting which will be held on Monday, April 28th from 7 – 8 pm, at Cedarbridge Academy. Parents, teachers, students and others across the Island, are invited to see a short film in which the founder of ‘Khan’ and Bill Gates provide an overview of this innovative Online Program.
Following the film, a panel of local educators will offer their insights and answer questions. This will include:
- Marva Allen who is the recently-retired Mathematics Coordinator for the Ministry of Education.
- Jane Hizer – Head of Information Technology at Saltus.
- Robert Steede – Head of Math at Cedarbridge.
- Shaun Thomas – Teacher of Senior Math & Physics at MSA.
The Meeting will conclude with an overview of a local pilot training program for ‘Champions of Khan’. This 4 – unit course, begins on April 29th and with the sponsorship of the Bermuda Union of Teachers, is being offered free of charge to educators, parents and other stakeholders. This train-the-trainers process will have these ‘champions’ transfer their skills to their peer groups. The resulting cascade can make ‘Khan’ more accessible to greater numbers; thus empowering more learners in Bermuda. (Those interested in the course can call 292-6515).
