U.S. Consulate to screen environmental films
In recognition of Earth Day and continuing the series “Consulate Night at the Library,” the U.S. Consulate in cooperation with the Bermuda National Library will screen the following two videos at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, upstairs at the library on Queen Street. Everyone is invited to this free event.
- A GARDEN IN CAIRO (30 minutes)
Cairo is one of the most populated cities in the world, but Al-Azhar Park – a 500 year old dump –now provides vital green space and a source of civic pride.
- MODERN MARVELS: RENEWABLE ENERGY (50 minutes)
This DVD examines how advanced technologies are working to harness air, water, earth and fire to produce clean and reliable sources of energy. On a visit to the FedEx distribution center in California, discover how this global shipping giant has managed to use solar power to fulfill 80 percent of its peak electricity needs. Also, find out how ancient civilizations were utilizing renewable resources more than two millennia ago. MODERN MARVELS examines the benefits of some of the most reliable renewable sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, biofuel, and tidal power.
U.S. Consul General Bob Settje, who will attend the screening and lead discussion afterwards, said, “To recognize Earth Day, the Consulate wanted films that would resonate with Bermudians. We think these two stories will. One is about creating a park from a dump, which I know is the ultimate goal of the Marsh Folly Compost Facility. The other is about renewable energy, with an emphasis on solar power. That, too, would seem to have relevance for Bermuda. ”
Because of limited space, the library can only accommodate 50 guests on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The adult library on Queen Street and the U.S. Consulate General are collaborating to showcase documentaries, docudramas, films, and educational videos on a variety of topics of interest to both Americans and the Bermudian public. The State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs sources the films from the private sector (PBS, HBO, Discovery, The History Channel, etc.) and independent producers.
Consul General Settje thanks Head Librarian Joanne Brangman for partnering with the Consulate to host these regular gatherings.
