A total of 19 Bermuda residents will run the Boston Marathon on Monday, with many returning to the scene of last year’s bomb attacks that killed three and injured more than 250.

Candace Roach, of the Weekenders running group, told the Bermuda Sun the island's runners were going back to not only 'finish what they started' but also to show their solidarity with the people of Boston.

Last year's horrific scenes meant many competitors were unable to complete the distance as the city went into lockdown. And on Monday, 36,000 runners will not only take on the 26.2-mile course as a challenge in its own right but will also be taking part as a stand against terrorism.

“We wanted to support the city of Boston by coming back and crossing the finish line," said Roach.

"The Weekenders running group is an amazing group of people that help and encourage each other with their running goals, including training for the Boston marathon.

“It has been a huge support to train with others who are running Boston, which included many of us who were unable to cross the finish line last year.

“Completing the longer runs on Saturday morning with others has been instrumental in being able to run Boston. Liz Craig, Natalie Dryli and Steve Ortiz have  been amazing with organizing routes, water stops and creating such a positive and supportive environment for training.”

Roach said the build-up to the race in the Massachusetts city has been inspiring.

She said: “It's been a wonderful experience already as most of us arrived on Saturday. The city of Boston is really doing a great job and coming together for such a wonderful event.

“Everyone in the city is wearing the Boston colors and Boston Strong logo. It’s a great, positive atmosphere. We feel lucky to be able to take part in this year’s event.”

She added: “We believe it's important to support Boston after the horrible event that took place last year. We hope by crossing the finish that we are able to show Bermuda's support and represent Bermuda to the best of our abilities.”
