Organisers of this weekend's Triple Challenge have hailed the event a huge success.

Teams took part in a series of challenges across the island to test their endurance limits and raise money for local charities.

The three-day event raised close to $30,000 for eight local charities including: St. George's Preparatory PTA, East End Primary PTA, Somerset Primary PTA, New Beginnings Education Trust, The Sunshine League, Bermuda Insurance Institute, Raleigh, and Knowledge Quest.

The challenge began on Friday evening in St George's with scores of participants taking part in an urban foot race through the town.

And over the next two days islanders were put through a series of grueling tests along South Shore and Dockyard.

Organiser Reid Robinson told the Bermuda Sun: "The Bermuda Triple Challenge turned out to be a "leaping" success with only one disappointment; it didn't snow on Saturday for the hardcore 5km or 10km totally off road KRyS Global Island Challenge.

"We were overwhelmed with numbers of teams signed up for all three events which maximizes points towards the overall win.  We wanted to capture the true beauty of Bermuda in 3 unique obstacle courses ranging from 2.5km to 10km, inspiring true teamwork.

"The first all on-road CrossFit inspired event, sponsored by Butterfield & Vallis, saw the challengers through 25 urban obstacles ranging from: climbing a pink & blue bus, running over top parked cars, stacking 12" concrete blocks, hurdling park benches and swinging through the Bermuda Scaffolding "monkey bars."

The event which spanned the length of the island took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

And even the torrential downpours today failed to dampen the spirits of contestants and organisers, with everyone pulling together to make the event a success.

Mr Robinson added: "For the third year in a row the KRyS Global Island Challenge increased the torture to the unyielding participants by making them fill a 50lb sandbag with their bare hands and run with it the length of Warwick Long Bay.  We can only guess what the Bermuda longtails were thinking as the circled above.

"The finale for both 5km and 10km routes was the Regiment Assault Course, which included a 20ft wall, high wire balance rope and dark and dirty tunnels to crawl through.

"The culminating event, ACE Group's Royal Challenge in Dockyard, combined both on-road, off-road and a swim obstacle with the piece de resistance - a tour of Casemates Prison courtesy of the Bermuda National Museum.

"Amongst many other obstacles, challengers jumped off the pier and swam across the marine entrance to Dockyard, and carried telephone poles around Commissioner's Point.  Course designer Jason Correia's favourite obstacle was the "Hot Tub," a dumpster filled with water and two dozen 5 gallon ice cubes!  Burrrrr.

"The volunteers provided by the charities were instrumental in safety, giving directions and instructions and of course dishing out the 15 penalty burpees to the teams that did not complete each obstacle."
