Millemnnium ferry makes its return to Old Town
News that the Millennium ferry will return to Bermuda next year has been welcomed in the East End.
Mayor Garth Rothwell told the Bermuda Sun that the 400-capacity ferry had provided a boost to the Old Town.
He added: “It is good news that this ferry is coming back next year.
“It has been reliable and it has meant hundreds of people have been brought down from Dockyard.
“We hope to get a few more morning trips next year to increase the number of people walking passed the shops and eating in the town.
“It’s difficult to say whether this ferry has brought in more revenue to the town, but certainly the retailers on Water Street have said they have noticed the difference when the ferry is in.”
Since the Millennium was brought into service in May, around 95,000 passengers have been carried between Dockyard and St George’s.
The ferry has made more than 550 one-way trips and only been cancelled twice, once during Tropical Storm Gabrielle and again yesterday.
The Rhode Island ferry will sail back to the US in October before returning to Bermuda in time for next year’s cruise season. St George’s MP Kenneth Bascome said: “The fact that she has been coming alongside at Penno’s, because she is a side loader, has meant that visitors have walked all the way through the town instead of just stopping in one area.
“I believe everyone is pleased that this ferry is coming back next year.”
