Wahoo's thermidor was the star of the plate

Every September, something magical happens — the start of lobster season.

For seven months, we can enjoy local spiny lobsters and guinea chicks.

I’ve eaten lobster before — mac and cheese, pasta, spring rolls and cakes — but had never ordered an actual lobster in a restaurant.

This past weekend, Wahoo’s Bistro took my lobster virginity.

My boyfriend and I went to Wahoo’s on a gorgeous Friday evening. We were given a table right at the edge of the dock.

For starters, we ordered the special — bacon wrapped scallops with gremolata butter.

The scallops were flawless and buttery. It is so easy so overcook a scallop, which gives it a rubbery texture. The bacon was crisp and complimented the seared scallop. But it was the gremolata butter took the dish to another level. The butter was filled with garlic and herbs, and added zest to the overall dish. Grilled garlic bread on the side upped the garlic factor, always a good thing in my book.

We sopped up the butter with the bread. Our server Connie brought us out more bread as there was plenty of butter left after eating the scallops.

For the main course, I ordered a half lobster thermidor with mashed potatoes and vegetables. My boyfriend ordered crab stuffed lobster with peas and rice and vegetables.

It was love at first bite with my lobster. The sauce was creamy and delicious. The lobster was soft and full of rich, buttery flavour.

The top of the dish had breadcrumbs and cheese that had been taken out of the broiler at the right time, so there was a crunch to accompany the rich sauce and light, delicate texture of the lobster.

While the dish certainly was heavy, it didn’t seem to be. The lobster was the star of the plate and lived up to the hype surrounding Wahoo’s. My boyfriend actually preferred the thermidor to his crab stuffed lobster.

For dessert, we ordered chocolate bread pudding with a rum sauce and
vanilla bean gelato.

The chocolate bread pudding was okay. I don’t know that I would order it again. The sauce was delicious and the gelato was literally melting in my mouth — velvety and smooth.

The intense vanilla flavour paired well with the rum sauce and the chocolate pudding. Overall, it was a good dessert because of the gelato.

If you are looking for a fabulous lobster dinner, then head to Wahoo’s and tell Geza and Alfred that I sent you.

Thermidor is $42 for half and $80 for whole. Crab stuffed lobster is $39 for half, $45 for medium half or $75 for whole.
