Sports shorts: Global boost for gymnasts
The Bermuda Gymnastics Association has been accepted into the USA Gymnastics Global Ambassador Programme.
The initiative is aimed at assisting up-and-coming gymnastics programmes around the world reach a higher level of international success.
The application had to include a detailed plan of how USA Gymnastics could assist the Bermuda programme, as well as demonstrate the island had the necessary infrastructure, athlete base, and passion already in place to do the work.
Bermuda’s first Global Ambassador initiative will be a training camp over the October mid-term break with USA National Team Coach Marvin Sharp, who has coached many elite athletes including world champion and Olympic medallist Bridget Sloan.
Golfers dodge the lightning
The Bermuda Golf Association managed to squeeze in their 2013 Team Medal Championships at Riddell’s Bay Golf Club at the weekend despite a one-and-a-half hour delay due to thunder and lightning.
Teams of four from different clubs or associations competed against each other with the best three total scores out of four counting towards the team score.
The winners of the men’s event were: Jarryd Dillas, Will Haddrell, Chris Brough and Mark Phillips.
And the champions in the ladies competition were: Tracy Nash, Katrin Burnie, Valerie Nearon and Susan Vallis.
BdaBlue is up and running
Round One of the BdaBlue Team Squash Championships got under wat last night at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.
