What is the future of telecommunications in Bermuda?

How is technology being used to commit crime in Bermuda?

How can companies add true value to an audit?

These and other questions will be answered at the Fourth Annual ISACA Conference on September 27 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

Andrew Kago, president of the ISACA Bermuda chapter and senior compliance officer at Validus Holdings Ltd. told the Bermuda Sun ISACA (Information System and Audit Control Association), brings together auditors and IT professions. He said the Bermuda chapter of ISACA has been in existence since 1996.

Mr Kago said the group has been holding monthly and quarterly lunches to inform members of issues pertaining to their profession.

Risk

“We’ve put together a host of speakers… to speak to the general ISACA members but we also open it to others who we think would be interested in this type of discussion.”

Two of the discussions feature on Internet risk and crime. Ian Evelyn from the Bermuda Monetary Authority along with Nancy Volesky, the Bermuda Government’s E-Commerce director for the Ministry of Economic Development will speak on Cyber Risk from a Regulator’s Point of View.

Mr Kago said, “There has been a heightened awareness of that these things are happening in the world. Who is responsible for stopping this or trying to manage this risk?”

He said chief information officers and the IT managers with board support usually hold the first line of responsibility.

“The question is: What do they do next?”

Mr Kago said the BMA along with Government’s E-Commerce Department “will be sharing their views on cyber crime… and managing this particular risk”.

Mr Kago said: “This is a real threat. I’m really interested in hearing what the BMA has to say, I’m also looking for the Bermuda Police Service input.

“When the BMA talks, people listen. When they come up with legislation and any kind of initiative, the community has to embrace it.

“From an IT perspective, it’s going to be interesting.”

Corrupted

Detective Jeffrey Lawrence of the Bermuda Police Service’s Financial Crime Unit will provide an overview of how technology has been used to commit financial crime in Bermuda and what types of digital evidence has been used at trial.

Detective Lawrence, a certified anti-money-laundering specialist as well as a certificate holder in forensic accounting, will also discuss what the requirements are for evidence to be admitted in court and how easily evidence can be corrupted in a crisis environment by an in-house investigation.

He said anyone who has never been to one of these conferences it is good to connect with others in the field.

“It’s all about networking and when you look at the topics we have at hand, they are interesting topics. We have had good attendance in the past and good feedback.
