Westmeath to help fight dementia

A care home will be hosting a ‘peddler’s porch’ this weekend to help raise funds to treat dementia.

Westmeath Residential and Nursing Home has organized the event as part of new drive to raise awareness of the condition in Bermuda.

A range of art and craft ware including handmade jewellery, knitted scarves and cedar sculptures will be on sale at the residential home between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.

And there are still spaces available for islanders who would like to take part in the fundraiser.

Westmeath’s administrator, Chrissie Kempe, told the Sun: “The Peddler’s Porch comes on the tails of World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21 and is part of our ongoing commitment to raising awareness about these conditions.

“We will also be attending the eight annual Dementia Congress in the UK next month to look at new ways we can improve the care we provide.

“Dementia is a serious concern especially in Bermuda these days and we need to raise awareness of how to treat it rather than bury our head in the sands about it.”

Artwork and ornaments created by residents will also be on sale at Saturday’s event as well as Westmeath’s 2014 calendar.
